I photograph because I love getting to know my subjects and creating images that capture their unique personalities. There are different ways to approach portrait photography. One approach is to create posed, choreographed scenes. The benefit of this method is that the photographer has complete control over the light, shadows, color, and contrast. But another way is to let the subject’s personality guide and influence the photographs. This is the approach I prefer because I see my photography as a collaboration between the subject and myself.
As a result, I lean more toward art photography than commercial photography. This means my work may include artistic elements such as film grain, motion blur, out-of-focus areas, and candid reactions. My goal isn’t just to make my subjects look good but to create photographs that could, in theory, hang in a gallery and be appreciated by people who don’t even know you.
