Thanks to my wife, a retired professional ballet dancer from Houston Ballet, I have developed a great appreciation for ballet. Although never a dancer, I am a student of ballet history and criticism. My wife and I make a unique dance photography team, combining her expertise in Pilates, Gyrotonic, and private ballet instruction with my technical camera and artistic photography skills. This allows us to create photographs that showcase good form, proper technique, and natural movement, which also exist as works of art for those less familiar with dance.
In my opinion, some dance photography tends to focus too much on the dancer's body rather than their movement. Too often, dance photography can even overlap with glamour or boudoir photography. While I believe these types of photography are valid and essential, photographs of a dancer in a leotard can too often not be much different from photographs of a model in a bodysuit.
When capturing dancers' movements through photography, I aim to showcase their skill and grace. To achieve this, my photographs often include motion blur and out-of-focus areas, as I believe this brings a fresh perspective to traditional dance photography.
If you are interested in collaborating with my wife and me to create stunning photographs that artistically highlight your movement, we would be thrilled to work with you.
